Spend the night at a 'speakeasy' bar sometimes
There is a term in English called ‘speakeasy.’ It originally referred to illegal alcohol vendors during the Prohibition era. In modern times, it is also used to describe retro-style hidden bars or ounges. Honolulu has some discreet bars that even locals might not know about.
“Brix & Stones”
In Kakaako, a neighborhood transformed by redevelopment with galleries and boutiques, there’s a little-known gem—a cigar bar called Bricks & Stones, likely the only indoor venue in Hawaii where you can enjoy cigars.
Rick Lilly, with extensive experience as a sommelier, was planning to open Hawaii’s first natural wine bar when the pandemic lockdown hit—a period when bars were off-limits. He shifted gears to create a natural wine retail concept, and leveraging his partner Elaine’s tobacco sales license, they began selling cigars as well.
One day, while lighting a cigar in the shop, Lilly noticed smoke escaping through gaps in the decaying ceiling. He negotiated with the building owner to create a ventilation system, transforming the space into a cigar bar and securing the necessary permits.
The bar is tucked away on the second floor of an auto repair shop, featuring a store for liquor and cigars, alongside a lounge. However, the true “Speakeasy” ambiance lies deeper inside— a vintage, adult atmosphere. Besides natural wines, they offer premium bourbons purchased by the barrel. Note that the bar operates strictly by reservation—you must book online, purchase a $25 lounge pass, and read the “NEED TO KNOW” guidelines on their website.
The owners, Rick Lilly and Elaine. Mr. Lilly has built a long career as a sommelier in California.

Let’s also introduce another “Speakeasy” in Waikiki. Located on the 30th floor of the Ilikai Hotel & Luxury Suites, there’s a Mediterranean restaurant called Pesca. Enter directly via an elevator to Pesca, announce your reservation, and you’ll be guided to the 29th floor, passing through the food storage yard. Beyond lies Gallery 29, a secluded lounge bar with seating for 8 at the counter and about 15 in the lounge. You can have wine and dishes delivered from Pesca, but there’s a minimum spend requirement of $2,500 and a maximum usage time of 3 hours. This bar also operates on a strict reservation- only basis, so contacting Pesca directly to book is advisable. Remember these options for private parties in Waikiki—it’s good to keep them in mind.
