Enjoy a Glamorous Time with a Copper Ice Pail -Momentum Factory Orii-
Takaoka copperware, a traditional craft of Toyama, has a history that dates back to the early 1600s, with roots tracing back to the Muromachi period. Recently, its value is gaining renewed attention. ‘By evolving the traditional coloring techniques of Takaoka copperware and using substances like chemicals, rice bran beds, and grated daikon, as well as adding heat, we achieve unique colors and patterns,’ says Kouji Orii.
The copperware created by Mr. Orii ranges from art pieces to everyday items and cutlery. Not only is the design appealing, but the unique colors and patterns, as mentioned by Mr. Orii, are also striking. This is coloring through chemical reactions, not painting. ‘Among the various metals, only copper can produce such diverse colors through these changes. After coloring, we apply a clear coating to harden the surface, allowing you to enjoy the texture for a long time,’ he explains.
In addition to his own works, Mr. Orii actively collaborates with others, such as <Hakuza>, inheriting the traditional Kanazawa gold leaf technique, and <DOT DESIGN> in Taiwan, to showcase the possibilities and allure of copperware in various forms. Among these, an item he recommends to readers is the ice bucket. ‘The exterior of our ice bucket can be decorated with various colors while the interior retains the natural color of copper, allowing you to enjoy the contrast,’ he notes. Additionally, copper has antibacterial properties and high thermal conductivity, making it advantageous for keeping ice longer as it melts slowly. Placing your favorite bottle in this ice bucket can add a touch of elegance to your mealtime.
Mr. Orii’s works demonstrate the beauty of traditional crafts living within everyday life. Items like single-stem vases that utilize the properties of copper can create a special ambiance in your home.
