An exquisite blend of timeless artworks and luxurious accommodation from around the world “ART MON ZEN KYOTO”

Within reach and within sight lie historical artworks and antiques, yet this is not a museum. Born from a desire to make art more accessible, ART MON ZEN KYOTO is an astonishing art hotel.

Upon arrival, visitors are led to a space called “Tengai,” surrounded by curtains and elevated above the floor. Before them spreads a tatami-matted low table, complemented by chairs designed to align with the eye level when seated formally, creating a space that feels both like a tearoom and something uniquely special. In fact, these tables are entirely tatami-matted, serving various purposes such as transforming into a tearoom or a Noh stage, embodying the spirituality inherent in “Tengai.”

The tea served here is ground within the hotel, accompanied by original tea sweets
crafted by an exclusive patissier. Immersed in Kyoto’s hospitality and atmosphere, guests feel cleansed of unnecessary distractions.

Just by lifting one’s gaze, various artworks come into view. Old Baccarat chandeliers adorn the ceiling, while below, contemporary art and Ming dynasty Chinese artworks are boldly and yet harmoniously displayed. Notably, the hanging scrolls, during my visit, dated back to the Edo period, but they can change not only with the seasons but also for events or visiting dignitaries.

Exploring and imagining about the various artworks and experiencing them up close fosters curiosity and expands one’s knowledge. To reiterate, this is not a museum. It is a hotel. Yet, it marks the beginning of an unfolding spectrum of art colors yet to come.

In each room at ART MON ZEN KYOTO, artworks curated to complement the space are displayed in glass showcases. These displays are not merely placed haphazardly; they come with explanatory texts and spotlights, creating an ambiance reminiscent of an art museum. The meticulous attention to detail ensures that artworks can be admired from every corner of the room, even while soaking in the bath.

The rooms themselves are a testament to bespoke craftsmanship. All the furniture is custom-made exclusively for this hotel. Sofas are upholstered with luxurious fabric from the Dutch brand Carlucci di Chivasso, and counters are crafted from keyaki and walnut wood with unique specifications. This approach embodies the philosophy of “God is in the details,” reflecting meticulous care and craftsmanship in every aspect. The hotel was constructed without a budget constraint to “create what they wanted to create.” This has resulted in a blend of traditional Japanese sukiya architecture and Western-style design by a master craftsman known for sukiya construction.

Techniques such as plaster walls, ceilings, and “naguri” flooring are evident throughout the hotel. The experience is akin to navigating a vast ocean where Eastern and Western aesthetics harmonize with various artworks, offering a sense of tranquility akin to surrendering to its waves. Such a hotel is truly unique worldwide.
